Volvo Chooses South Carolina For Its First US Plant
Volvo will start construction on its first US assembly plant in Berkeley County, South Carolina. This is the first step in a $500,000,000 expansion plan. Construction will begin in September and should be completed sometime in 2018. According to Volvo’s estimates, they will hire around 4,000 workers, and will produce 100,000 vehicles each year.
The Swedish company went on to explain that they chose Berkeley County because of its proximity to an international port, various transport infrastructures and a qualified workforce.
This new factory is part of Volvo’s expansion plan, which has the ambitious goal of doubling its global sales in the next few years. This will be the manufacturer’s fifth assembly plant; they already operate two in Europe and the rest are in China.
