Using Your Cellphone While Driving: The Sentence Will Be Harsher
Good news for everyone who is afraid of being hit by a driver who doesn’t fully know what's going on around their two-ton vehicle because they're writing a text message or talking to someone on their phone: the SAAQ just announced that the cell phone law will be made even stricter.
On April 23rd, the SAAQ will drop one more point off your license if you get caught using your phone while driving: 4 instead of 3. The ticket will also be pricier, ranging from $80 to $100.
This means that not only will adults think twice before taking a call, but this new law will also have a beneficial effect on younger drivers who still have their probationary licenses. Since they effectively only have 4 points to lose, one single offence would ensure that they lose their license for 3 months.
Considering the fact that your reflexes, your car control skills and your reaction times are worse when you are talking on your phone has been proven time and time again, this bad habit needs to go away, and a stricter law might actually help.
