Porsche Introduces The 2016 Boxster Spyder, The Most Powerful Ever Made
We thought that Porsche might have seized the occasion to unveil the basic or diesel Macan, but since the New York Auto Show is the last major event before summer, the automaker decided to shine the spotlight on an exclusive version of its popular two-seat roadster.
The Boxster has seduced a lot of drivers with its captivating ride and retractable roof that allows you to cruise with the wind in your hair. It’s a pure sports convertible that is nonetheless accessible to a good number of buyers thanks to its reasonable starting price. For 2016, Porsche has enhanced the line-up with the Boxster Spyder, a convertible built for purists. It features all of the model’s characteristic qualities, but kicks the performance aspect up a notch. Its secret: more output and lighter materials—two essentials kept from the previous Boxster Spyder.
The 911’s engine
At the heart of the 2016 Boxster Spyder is a 3.8L six-cylinder engine that pumps out 375 horsepower. That’s 60 more ponies than the Boxster S and 45 more than the Boxster GTS. The Spyder gives a pass to the PDK automatic transmission and comes equipped with a six-speed manual instead. This option is both lighter and more fun. According to Porsche, its favorable power-to-weight ratio allows it to sprint from 0 to 100 km/hr in about 4.5 seconds.
Its improved handling on the track is due to its stiffer suspension, which has also been lowered 20 mm to bring down the vehicle’s centre of gravity. The more powerful brakes were also taken from the 911 Carrera, while the steering offers a little more feedback than in the past.
Style-wise, the model revives some of the classic features from older race cars. The two bumps behind the headrests that stretch onto the trunk lid are reminiscent of the 1960s 718 Spyder. As in the previous Boxster Spyder, the soft top is manually retractable. The front and rear treatments include some visual characteristics from the recently unveiled Cayman GT4. Meanwhile, some of the exclusive onboard features include the carbon-fibre shell seats, found on the 918 Spyder, no less!
The 2016 Boxster Spyder should hit the market in the third quarter of 2015. It’s set to start at $93,700.
