Ford Built An Adult-Sized Tonka
Do you remember your first Tonka truck? Easily the most solid toy you ever had, this big yellow hunk of metal could carry sand, build castles, and demolish walls… It inspired a generation to own pickup trucks as soon as they could legally do so, and their kids are now playing with modern versions of the toy.
To show off their newest F-750, Ford decided to appeal to the inner child in all of us. At the NTEA Work Truck Show, the Dearborn manufacturer unveiled a full-size Tonka Truck.
Under the obligatory yellow paint, the truck differs from the 2014 model with new front fenders, sealed headlights which offer the advantage of being easy to replace if they are broken on a work site, larger mirrors and a different cabin rear wall that helps owners fit specialized equipment to their truck, like the dump shown here.
Said dump can be used to haul up to 7,711 kg of material of your choosing. The engine of choice for this Tonka is a turbodiesel V8 pumping out 330 horsepower and 725 pound-feet of torque backed by a heavy-duty six-speed transmission. If you need gasoline power, a 6.8-litre V10 is also available.
You can expect to see these big Ford F-750s on the roads shortly, but this full-size Tonka will sadly remain a show-floor attraction.
…Unless someone wants to relive their youth?
