No Diesel For Canadian TTs

The third generation Audi TT will be arriving in Canada next August, powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine. It will be available with 230 hp and 310 hp in the TT and TTS models respectively. What will not be coming to Canada is the more fuel-efficient diesel model.

The 2016 Audi TT 2.0 TDI Ultra uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel. Output from this engine has been boosted to 184 hp compared to the A3’s 150. Maximum torque output matches that of the TTS at 280 lb-ft.

Of course, the TDI’s biggest advantage is its frugal fuel consumption, with a claimed 4.3L/100 km combined compared to 6.7L for the gasoline powered TT, according to European specs.

Unfortunately, North Americans still believe diesel engines belong in heavy-duty pickup trucks, which is why Audi, and many other automakers, are reluctant to bring smaller diesel models here.
