BMW Unveils The Next Generation Of iDrive
BMW’s infotainment system, iDrive, has quite a reputation: its launch was marred by a few problems, and it was known for being less than convivial to use. However, it has gotten a lot better in the last few years.
At this year’s CES, the Bavarian manufacturer unveiled the next generation of iDrive, which should see its first real-world application in the upcoming 7 Series. The ubiquitous control knob is back, but users will now be able to use the touchscreen to enter information. A few commands will also be adjusted with hand movements; you just need to wave or point your fingers over the shift lever, and iDrive will ‘’see’’ what you are doing and react accordingly.

Finally, BMW added a new function, called TouchCommand. Under that fancy name is a simple piece of technology: a Samsung tablet with a pre-installed BMW app that enables the rear passengers to change radio settings, adjust the climate control for the rear seats, fire up the heated seats, or change the GPS’ destination.
