Second-Generation Audi Q7 Unveiled
Audi just unveiled the second generation of their Q7 SUV, which should arrive in dealerships as a 2015 model. The vehicle was originally set to be unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show, but an anonymous source leaked a few pictures early, forcing the manufacturer to send a press release earlier than they expected.
By using a new platform, the SUV has slimmed down significantly; compared to the outgoing model, the next Q7 will be up to 325 kg lighter. This is possible not only because of the new chassis, but also because of a switch to aluminium: the doors, hood, front fenders, and rear hatch are all made from this material.

Dimension-wise, Audi’s flagship SUV remains roughly the same, even shrinking a bit: it is 37mm shorter and 15 mm narrower, but remains as high as it ever has been. However, interior space has been optimized: there is 21 mm more legroom for the second-row passengers, and the headroom has been improved. The interior has been modernized, and now features the Audi Virtual Cockpit launched in the TT.
Under the hood, a 3-litre turbodiesel V6 will power the big vehicle. With 272 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque, this mill should satisfy the needs of the vast majority; it is also efficient, with an announced fuel consumption of 5.7 litres per 100 km. Those who can’t stand the smell of diesel can select a 333-horsepower gasoline V6. It seems that a four-cylinder is also now available, with 252 horsepower and 272 pound-feet of torque.
The Q7 can also be outfitted with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. It still uses the diesel V6, but also features a small electric motor in the eight-speed transmission. It can run for 56 kilometres in all-electric mode.
We will see the 2015 Audi Q7 for the first time at the North American International Auto Show.
