Maserati Green-Lights the Alfieri
Maserati has been somewhat of a dying brand in the last few years, but now that FCA has finally found it a place in its empire, the small Italian manufacturer is clawing its way back up. The Ghibli brought some new blood to the company, and the Levante SUV will give them a ticket to enter a very competitive segment.
However, the brand needs something that more typically represents the Italian 'passione' than a soccer-mom’s crossover. This is why, according to our sources, Maserati’s management just approved the production of the Alfieri Concept that was unveiled in Geneva.
According to them, the Alfieri will be aimed directly at the Jaguar F-Type and Porsche 911, but it will be more exclusive (which they will probably accomplish with a limited production run).
Engine-wise, the Alfieri will sport a twin-turbo V6 that pumps out 404 horsepower in the base versions, while the top-of-the-line models will have up to 513 horsepower. Power will be sent to the rear wheels, while an all-wheel drive drivetrain is optional. If these specifications are somewhat familiar, it’s because the Alfieri will use the same chassis and drivetrain as the Ghibli.
We can expect the Maserati Alfieri Coupe to be launched in 2016, before being followed by a convertible in 2017. The company also expects to roll out the Levante in 2015, and the next iteration of the GranTurismo will come in 2018.
