More Info on the McLaren P1 GTR
After announcing that they would produce a new track-focused version of the P1 for the ultra-wealthy with the need for speed, McLaren has now shared new pictures of the car’s interior, as well as some information about how the P1 GTR Racing Program will be run.
The cockpit has been stripped of everything that doesn’t help in the pursuit of lap times: no A/C and no radio (though while it may be hard to get lost on a racetrack, McLaren’s engineers chose to keep the GPS system, just in case…). The steering wheel is based on the one in the MP4-23 Formula One car that won the manufacturer’s championship in 2008. As for the driver’s seat, it will be tailored to each driver and bolted directly to the car’s chassis to reduce weight.
Buyers who are ready to write a $3.6 million check to the Woking manufacturer get more than a 1000 horsepower track toy: each P1 GTR sold will race in a spec-series championship. Fought on six of the best tracks in the world, these races will turn the participants into real race car drivers: they will receive driving tips from a professional driver, the car is prepared by a team of engineers and each racer gets intensive training in Woking’s F1 simulator to memorize the track beforehand.
This program is reminiscent of Ferrari's FXX, which offered a similar experience.
