Quebec Could Have Variable Speed Limits
Ever since I was young, I have always told that speed limits were unchangeable entities. It doesn’t matter whether you are driving on an empty stretch of highway at 2 AM or during a snowstorm in January, if the sign says 100 km/h, the limit is 100 km/h, not less (and certainly not more!).
In the near future however, this could change. Montreal and Quebec City will try out a variable speed limit project, where speeds could drop and rise depending on the time of day, traffic density and weather conditions.
Quebec would not be the first to use this system, as a few other countries have already implemented it. They use speed signs with electronic displays to inform motorists of the current speed limit.
While the exact roads where the variable speed limits will be tested have not been announced, we know that they will be on roads where the limit is under 100 km/h, so we can exclude highways.
The concerned roads will be announced this fall.
