The 2015 Smart Fortwo and Forfour are here!
The first generation of the Smart Fortwo was a success in Europe, where the roads are winding and narrow. The small car was able to park anywhere, sometimes taking half a spot. While it was not such a success here, its small size still gave it a few fans. However, its basic design harkened back to the last millennium (1998, technically), so it was long overdue for a new face!
Enter the new 2015 Smart Fortwo. While the new front fascia is instantly recognizable, it is much more modern than the old one.
Exterior dimensions are still worthy of the Smart badge: 2.69 metres long, 1.66m wide and a 1.873m wheelbase. The turning radius is also noteworthy, at 6.95 metres.
The main change for this new version is the addition of a four-door model. Named Forfour, it is only 80 centimetres longer than the standard Fortwo. It features a 2.494m wheelbase.
Inside, the car takes a few cues from the last model, but we see that the pods that used to house gauges are now used as air ducts.
The new Smarts also feature a selection of 3-cylinder engines: a naturally-aspirated 1 litre producing 71 HP and 67 pound-feet of torque, and a turbocharged 0.9 litre with an exhilarating 90HP. This one is also equipped with a start/stop function, in an effort to quench this mill's probably insatiable thirst for fuel. Both powertrains are offered with a 5-speed manual (finally!) or a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission.
The Forfour will be produced in Slovenia, in partnership with Renault, while the Fortwo will still be assembled in Hambach.
