The First Volkswagen XL1 was Delivered
The Volkswagen XL1 is a feat of engineering used to prototype various technologies that will eventually be used on the more mundane vehicles in the brand.
After years of development, the first client has taken delivery of their XL1. The happy customer had to pay about $150,000 for this car, but he acquired one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles money can buy: with a single liter of diesel, the XL1 can cover 100 km!

To achieve such impressive economy, everything in the XL1 was aimed at maximum efficiency: the whole car weighs only 795 kg, and it is powered by an 800cc turbocharged two-cylinder diesel complemented by a 27 HP electric motor. The VW can run on all-electric power, use both engines in tandem or run only on diesel. But then fuel consumption rises marginally to 2l/100 km... The XL1 can reach 158 km/h, and gets from 0 to 100 in 12 seconds.
Sadly, the whole production run (250 units) will be sold in Europe, so don't expect to see this efficient Volks on our roads anytime soon.
