Nissan Micra to Return to Canada?

Nissan is allegedly considering returning the Micra to North American showrooms, according to a new report by Autoguide.com.

The Nissan Micra was a sub-compact car sold here in Canada until 1991, when it was discontinued. It was replaced by the slightly larger and Mexico-built Nissan Sentra Classic.

With the popularity of small vehicles rising, the move could make sense for Nissan in order to compete with current players such as the Fiat 500, Chevrolet Spark, Smart Fortwo and Scion iQ. Still, no official announcement has been made by the company.

The potential difficulty for Nissan in bringing the Micra back would be to find a place in its lineup below the already inexpensive Vera Note which starts at $13,348. Another thing for them to consider is that small hatchbacks have traditionally been a tough sell in North America.

Still, if Nissan can find a way to mitigate these challenges, we could see a new Micra as early as mid-2014 in Canada and perhaps even the US.
