Tesla To Introduce Battery Swap Stations
Tesla has announced a new battery swap plan for the Tesla Model S sedan that will greatly extend the long-distance range of the electric car. The battery swap itself takes less than 90 seconds, and is designed to replace the need to charge the car's existing power pack while out on the road.
The swap is designed to compliment the system of 'Supercharger' stations that Tesla is deploying across the country, fast chargers the are intended to top up batteries as quickly as possible. The battery swap will cost roughly $60 USD and will offer you the option to pay more to keep the new battery or get your old one back, fully charged. Each of these options also carries an additional fee.
So far, the swap stations are projected to be installed in California and along the East Coast between Boston, MA, and Washington, DC. Each station will cost $500,000 to build.
