Nissan Recalls 841,000 Vehicles Worldwide
Complaints of 'disconnected steering' are common in this modern era of electric power steering systems, but close to 1 million Nissan owners worldwide are facing a recall due to a steering wheel problem that could lead to an actual loss of control while on the road. The problem affects a total of 841,000 automobiles built between 2002 and 2006.
Canadian buyers escape the brunt of the problem due to the fact that most vehicles affected by the steering wheel issue - specifically, the Nissan Micra city car - were never sold in North America. The Nissan Cube compact crossover, however, is also implicated in the recall, and this automobile was offered in both the United States and Canada.
The specifics? A bolt used to connect the steering wheel to the affected vehicles' steering column may have not been properly tightened at the factory, which could lead to the driver being unable to point the car in the proper direction. Although no accidents associated with the problem have yet to be reported, Nissan will be tightening the bolts on all recalled automobiles - a fix that should take less than an hour at the dealership.
