2014 Cadillac ELR: after the concept and the prototypes, the production model bows
The Converj concept that we saw on display at Detroit in 2009 confirmed Cadillac’s intentions of offering a car with an electric drivetrain similar to the Volt’s.
As expected, the production version unveiled in Detroit this week and christened ELR will be built on the platform of the Chevrolet Volt.
The overall style of the car closely follows the sharp lines of the acclaimed Converj concept.
When this premium coupe hits the market, it will mark the return of the famed American manufacturer to the personal luxury coupe class, a segment it left behind after the Cadillac Eldorado ended its run after 1999.
Extended range electric car
Like the Chevrolet/Holden Volt and Opel/Vauxhall Ampera, the Converj concept is equipped with an electric motor whose energy comes from a lithium-ion battery, which is either assisted or recharged by a small internal combustion engine that acts as an on-board generator and extends the energy supply for long-range travel.
All signs point to a similar setup for the Cadillac ELR, except that its overall power levels might surpass that of its platform donor.
