Packard Plant Getting Demolished

For decades, Detroit's decaying Packard plant has provided almost a cliché allegory for everything that was wrong with the American auto industry. Now, with the industry realizing the first stages of a significant turn-around, and Detroit itself literally begging to begin seeing the same progress, it should comes as no surprise that the city has finally tolled the bell for the decrepit facility. 

Having asked it be demolished for a few years now, the city of Detroit finally demanded action be taken last April, and it would appear the plant's current owner is finally preparing to move ahead. Occupying 3.5 million square feet, the plant will cost roughly $6 million US to demolish; a cost the owner hopes to recoup in the plant's scrap material. However sad the occasion may be to automotive history buffs, all historically relevant materials will be removed prior to the building's demolition.
