Land Rover Shows Next Iteration of Defender Concept
When it comes to creating the next iteration of a vehicle as iconic as the Land Rover Defender, one has to tread carefully. Having already debuted a couple examples of the D100 concept that's slated to replace the (very) aging platform, Land Rover revealed the third more recently at the Los Angeles auto show, along with the caveat that these concepts are just that: conceptual.
According to Chief Designer Gerry McGovern, the D100 concept is just one of many design studies at Land Rover's disposal, and while the brand is committed to building another Defender, it isn't necessarily committed to building this Defender. Saying that the new vehicle is a great opportunity for the Defender to broaden its proverbial horizons in terms of market share and appeal, McGovern claims that Land Rover is striving to both bring a more civilized, more widely appealing Defender to market without impinging on the historic 4x4's well-deserved reputation for military-grade toughness and capability. Long thought to be mutually exclusive, it'll be interesting to see how Land Rover pulls it off.
