Chevy Planning New Silverado As Old One Creates Debt Fears

The current crop of GMT-900 platform trucks and SUVs made a big splash a few years ago when they debuted. With more power, more space, and a new look, they’ve garnered much acclaim and not much criticism… which is precisely why GM is hoping to replace them soon. After all, it’s much better to replace a beloved vehicle with a better one than wait for the old one to get tired and decrepit. So, according to a recent Automotive News report that cites GM exec Don Johnson as a source, General Motors plans to retool their truck plants in 2012, which would put a new truck on schedule for a 2014 model year/late 2013 production run.

But this news comes just as Bloomberg has announced that GM dealers are sitting on 122-days’ worth of overstock trucks, while simultaneously saying that the typical Ford’s F-150 languishes for just 79 days on dealership lots. According to Bloomberg, the overstock situation demonstrates that GM has yet to learn the lesson of overextending oneself, and could spell disaster for the recently un-bankrupt brand. However, according to GM, the relatively high volume of trucks available is to ensure the availability of a wide variety of cab, bed, and engine configurations for all buyers.
