Future New York Cabs to be Turkish?
When cabs are as important to a city’s function as they are in New York, the decision of what sort of automobile to use as the local cab of choice isn’t left up to the cab companies. Sure, a motley assortment of used rental cars, ex-police Crown Victorias and Priuii might work great up here, but when you’ve got as many cabs as Manhattan, you need to give the people a choice.
And apparently the people’s choice is a Turkish design known as the Karsan V1. Having recently held a vote among New York citizens as to which cab they’d prefer, 66% of New Yorkers picked the European design out of a lineup that also included vehicles from Ford and Nissan. A unique design, the Karsan includes such interesting features as a panoramic glass roof and wheel chair ramps that are accessible from both sides of the vehicle, as well as adaptable drivetrain options that range from gas to diesel to fully electric.
With the ubiquitous Crown Victoria riding off into the sunset, New York City will apparently take the poll results into consideration when they set about replacing the popular car, although there are no guarantees as to what, precisely, will happen.
