Hyundai IONIQ to offer 3 electric powertrains in one vehicle
Hyundai will soon unveil a "world-first" alternative-fuel vehicle that offers the choice of three electrified powertrains in a single platform.
Set to debut in early 2016, the IONIQ will be available with electric, plug-in hybrid, or hybrid powertrains, which the automaker claims is "the first car from any manufacturer" to offer a trio of electrified choices in a single body type.
"Our vision for future mobility focuses on choice, with a variety of powertrain options to suit customers' varied lifestyles, without compromising on design or driving enjoyment," Hyundai R&D Center head Woong-Chul Yang said in a statement.
"IONIQ embodies Hyundai Motor’s vision to shift the automotive paradigm and future mobility; IONIQ is the fruit of our efforts to become the leader in the global green car market."
Hyundai said the car "breaks the hybrid stereotype" by delivering an entertaining driving experience alongside class-leading fuel economy and appealing design.
Based on an exclusive new platform, the IONIQ chassis has been "optimized to deliver responsive handling while remaining efficient" in each of its three powertrain choices.
