Volkswagen Updates Technology In Most Of Their 2016 Models

A new and improved infotainment system and a bunch of electronic safety driving aids will be added to VW’s line-up, in addition to a reskinned 2016 Passat midsize sedan that will arrive this fall and the newly available turbo 1.4L engine in the 2016 Jetta.

The MIB II infotainment system will be added to virtually every Volkswagen model line, and will support all three main connected car systems, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink. Directly through the system, owners can access their smartphone apps. The brand’s Car-Net connected vehicle services will also be included, which rounds up features such as remote vehicle access, advanced telematics and enhanced navigation.

The big news – for us, anyway – is the addition of a USB port in almost all models. Welcome to 2008, VW.

Adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking were introduced on the 2015 Volkswagen Touareg, and will also be available in the CC, Golf family and the Jetta. Automatic post-collision braking, introduced on the redesigned 2015 Golf, applies the brakes when an impact is detected and mitigates further damage; it now equips the Beetle and Beetle Convertible, the Jetta and the Touareg. As for lane departure warning, it will be optional on the CC and the Golf family. Finally, Parking Steering Assistance will be available on every member of the Golf family except the hot-rod Volkswagen Golf R, and will automatically steer the car into an identified parking spot.

A redesigned 2016 Volkswagen Passat will feature a restyled body as well as interior enhancements, in addition to the availability of several driving aids mentioned above. Last but not least, the wheezy 2.0L eight-valve engine that powered the base Jetta will finally be laid to rest, in favour of a turbocharged 1.4L four that develops 150 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque; the new engine will be much more powerful and 15 percent more efficient. The 2016 Volkswagen Jetta GLI has received some styling and equipment enhancements as well.

Volkswagen’s 2016 models should start arriving in Canadian dealerships this month.
